Dentistry in European University Teaching and Learning Methods

The Dentistry program at European University employs a variety of teaching and learning methods to ensure that students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. These methods include:

  •  Interactive Lectures: Traditional lectures are enhanced by interactive elements, encouraging student participation and engagement.
  •  Practical Work: Students gain hands-on experience through practical training, often using simulators and mannequins in a controlled environment.
  •  Problem-Based Learning (PBL): Starting in the first year, students engage in PBL, where they solve clinical cases, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This longitudinal method continues throughout the program.
  •  Role-Playing Games: Role-playing scenarios are used to teach communication, clinical procedures, and patient interaction.
  •  Simulation Training: Students practice dental techniques and procedures using phantoms and virtual dissection to simulate real-life situations, helping them to acquire practical experience.
  • Clinical Rotations: As students progress through the program, they participate in clinical rotations, working directly with patients under supervision in various healthcare settings, which allows them to apply theoretical knowledge in practice. These diverse teaching methods are designed to prepare students for the complexities of modern dental practice.

Assessment System:

The evaluation and grading system in the Dentistry program at European University is aligned with Georgia’s “Rules for calculating credits for higher education programs.” Student performance is assessed through a combination of mid-term and final assessments, with the final grade being the sum of these evaluations. The maximum possible score is 100 points, and the grading system includes both positive and negative assessments:

Grade Category

Grade

Points

Description

Positive Assessments

A (Excellent)

91-100

Outstanding performance

B (Very Good)

81-90

Above average, strong performance

C (Good)

81-90

Good performance, meets expectations

D (Satisfactory)

61-70

Acceptable, but with room for improvement

E (Sufficient)

51-60

Minimum passing grade

Negative Assessments

FX (Failed)

41-50

Failed, requires more work; may retake an additional exam

F (Failed)

40 or below

Failed, must retake the course

To pass the course, students must score at least 51 points overall. If a student receives an FX grade, they have the opportunity to take an additional exam. However, the grade from the additional exam does not add to their previous score but is treated as the final grade.

The final exam accounts for 40% of the total grade, with mid-term assessments making up the remaining 60%. Students must pass both the mid-term and final exam components, meeting minimum competency thresholds to successfully complete each course.

Evaluation and Grading

The Dentistry program at European University is supported by modern resources and facilities designed to provide students with practical, hands-on learning experiences. Key resources include:

  • Simulation Centers: These centers are equipped with advanced simulators and mannequins, allowing students to practice dental procedures in a controlled, realistic environment before engaging with real patients.
  • Phantom Classes: In these classes, students work on phantoms (dental models) to practice key dental techniques and procedures, helping them develop manual skills crucial for clinical practice.
  • Clinical Training Facilities: The program integrates clinical rotations where students gain experience in real healthcare settings, working under supervision with patients. These facilities are essential for developing clinical competencies.
  • Virtual Dissection Tools: Through virtual dissection and clinical case discussions, students learn human anatomy and regional anatomy in a dynamic and interactive manner. These resources ensure that students are well-prepared to handle modern dental challenges and equipped with the practical skills needed for successful professional practice
